Grants for Post-Doc/Graduate Students

Who Can Apply

  • Post-doctoral or graduate student researchers in good standing enrolled in a Washington-based university or college
  • Is currently performing research focused on native bees or honeybees; preference given to research that may have practical applications for Washington beekeepers
Restrictions

Students may only receive one award per academic year (August through May). Awards are made on a competitive basis, and not all requests will be awarded. WASBA determines grant amounts based on funding; amount funded may change annually and have varied from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars.

Deadline

Scholarship applications can be submitted throughout the year. The deadline is two weeks before the WASBA annual conference each fall. (2026’s deadline is September 1, 2026).  All proposals must be submitted no later than 7pm PDT on the deadline date.

Funding

The award will be made directly to the student.

Review Process

A WASBA selection committee will review applications and select recipients to recommend to the WASBA Board of Directors. Proposal ranking will weigh heavily on:

  • The novelty of the student’s research
  • The practical application of the student’s research for Washington beekeepers
  • The potential for the project to enhance the student’s research/scholarly productivity
Recipient Obligations

Graduate student recipients: Provide at least one submission regarding research to WASBA newsletter. Present finding at WASBA annual meeting. Give at least two presentations (via Zoom) to interested WASBA bee club members.
