Sales and use tax deferral for Beekeepers

pink flowersToday, Washington State Beekeepers are exempt from the following taxes:
• the B&O tax on the wholesale sale of honey and honey bee products;
• the B&O tax on bee pollination services; and
• the sales and use tax on the sale of pollinating bees.
To qualify for these tax exemptions, beekeepers must be registered with the Department of Agriculture.

These tax exemptions expire on July 1, 2013. We are asking the Washington State Legislature to remove the sunset clause on the exemption and need you to contact your representative to help. House Bill 1558 supports Beekeepers. Call your legislators to remind them of the importance of bees in agriculture. The exemption of the B & O tax is a big cost that commercial beekeepers are expected to pay. Out of state beekeepers who do 75% of fruit pollination do not pay this, only those registered with the state and only several have ever paid this tax. We are indeed agriculture.

It is important to have the expiration removed rather than just extend the exemption for another 3 years as Senate Bill 5453 indicates. Please support beekeepers by contacting your representatives. Leg-One-Pager-2013FEB (PDF)

  2. I just heard from Legislator Warnick’s office that there will be a hearing on February 4, at 1:30 p.m. in Room A of the O’Brien Bldg before the Finance Committee to hear testimony concerning HB 1558. Hope we have people to help. Thanks Sue

  3. Mike Skripek says:

    We need to have this extended. I cant be there but I will send a letter. Every Beek should be speaking out on this so it gets extended and made permanent.

  4. If you didn’t make it there in person, you can view the video of the Feb 4th hearing on HB1558 at this link. (1558 starts at 01:15:46)
    Very compelling and passionate presentations by all our fellow beekeepers – thank you!!
