Approved Membership Meeting Minutes February 9, 2019

Hi folks, here are the latest meeting minutes. I’ll get the new Board members posted on the website soon!

Called to Order by Kevin Oldenburg, President at approximately 4:35 p.m. February 9, 2019 at Eastern Washington University.  Minutes taken by Ellen Miller, filling in as temporary Secretary. A quorum is present.

  1. Election of BOD members:  All nominees listed on the written ballot were elected by the membership to the Board as was Michelle (Tammy) Clark who was nominated from the floor.

  •  Motion to Change Organization name from Washington State Beekeepers Association to WASBA-org to allow for formation of a new entity registering with Washington State and the IRS allowing for proper filing of required financial documentation.  Motion made/seconded/passed to change the name of the organization to Washington State Beekeepers Association.org
  • Changes to the By-Laws:
    • Motion to change the definition of the Membership Year (3.4.1) from October 1 to September 30 to January 1 to December 31 of each year.  Motion made/seconded/passed to change the Membership Year to January 1 to December 31 of each year.
  • Motion to change 3.5 Annual Meeting statement.  Motion made/seconded/passed to change the statement to read:  The annual membership meeting will be at the discretion of the Board of Directors with at least 60 days’ notice given to the general membership.
  • Motion to change 4.2 Number of Board members.  Motion made/seconded/passed to change the statement to read: The Board of Directors will be comprised of a minimum of 5 Directors and a maximum of 11 Directors.  Officers will be elected each year from the Board of Directors.

New Business:

Affiliate association membership:  There is no definition in either the By-Laws or on the website of the cost of association membership to WASBA.  Motion made/seconded/passed to add a statement on the WASBA website and to offer a form for initiating association membership payment which is to be $1/member of the local association on December 31 of the previous year with association dues due January of the next year.

Meeting with Presidents of local associations:  Kevin Oldenburg will schedule a meeting with the WASBA Board and the Presidents of all local associations.  The meeting is tentatively set for April 2019 in Ellensburg.  The purpose of the meeting is to establish effective communications among state beekeeping organizations.

WASBA Conference site for 2020 will be in the Tri-Cities.  WASBA is looking for a site on the west side for 2021.  Please contact Kevin if your association is willing to assist in hosting the conference.

Liability protection for local associations:  Discussion of how local clubs can acquire liability insurance at a reasonable rate.  Local associations that have obtained insurance for public presentations/classes/hands-on demonstrations were asked to send that information to Kevin so it can be distributed.

Apiary registration and use of the funds raised:  Discussion about the use of the funds raised from the apiary registration program.  Tim Hiatt will write an article for the next WASBA newsletter explaining how the funds are used for honey bee research in the state.

Old Business:

Financial report: There is currently $52,101.84 in the Scholarship/Grant account and $80,825.69 in the General Fund as of 12/31/18.  These numbers do not include any revenues/costs for the conference which was held on 2/9/19.

Journeyman Manual:  Motion made/seconded/passed to approve the Journeyman Manual and make it available to member associations and instructors.

Election of WASBA Officers:  The Board of Directors elected Kevin Oldenburg President; Ellen Miller Vice President; Tammy Clark Treasurer; Mark Salsar, Secretary; Tim Hiatt, Legislative Liaison.

    I would like information on starting a beekeeping association and affiliation with your group.
    It would be on the Key Peninsula, meeting in the Key Center.
